Week 15 - Video FINAL

For my video I decided to dedicate it to my lovely collection of guitars. I gave each guitar its own little segment with a background bursh that i felt really played off the guitar's personality. Yes, guitars have personalities, and names for that matter. I used the tween to adjust the fade ins and position movement of the guitars. I played with the delay to also give the animation more rhythm and for it to pause on each guitar so that people could get a good look at her before the name appears. I titled the animation "My Ladies" simply because those are my girls. I treat them like they are my girlfriends and each one has its own personality. Overall, this video was created to try and show an enticing animation with a solid rhythm that keeps the viewer intrigued for the whole animation.

Week 12: Bike Brushes

Week 14: Lakeview Street Poles

My first pole tended to be a little too much of an outstretch for Lakeview. It was more focused on creating a interesting piece of art work that fit the scale but not the demographic it was being created for. I went about it in the same manner as we did with the photoshop paintings. I would just create a bunch of layers and continue to turn layers on and off until i was i found a composition that i was happy with.
For my second composition, i decided to take into consideration more of what kind of area Lakeview is. I tied in the Cubs colors to help emphasize the Wrigleyville feel. I kept it simple and clean to try to play along with the upscale environment. I chose to leave out anything to represent boystown because i feel that regardless of a persons sexual orientation they can appreciate a piece of art that is made for their hometown/area.

Week 13: Bike Paintings Final

Craft - These "paintings" were all created from brushes that i made using photos I took at the bike shop across the street.  I went about these in a very random way. I just created a new layer with a similar color and a new brush each time. I then drew on that layer or stamped it. The entire piece was created without seeing or knowing where the previous layers were. So in the end, after turing on all the layers, i had a complete piece in front of me.
Composition - I then began to arrange the layers to create the compositions that worked best. I would turn off certain layers and move certain layers to the front or back until i was happy with my arrangement. Then i would save it or screen capture it and the result would be the three above.
Concept- The concept for these was pretty simple because we were already given a subject of bikes. I just tried to convey the message of bike without having a boring composition of just all bike parts. I kept the colors intense and the shapes pretty powerful. This enabled me to complete the assignment but still create a cool fresh piece or work.

Week 10: 88.3 Final Version

The changes made to this version from the last have really boosted its overall success. I threw a gradient coming down from the 88.3 to show some sense of righteousness or freedom. Like the light at the end of the tunnel concept. I added some more buttons to the radio to make it better resemble a radio. I also used bevel and emboss to slightly make the buttons look more real. Finally i cleaned up the blend between the drawing and the radio. I matched the radio color and with a brush just threw some strokes in to make it blend. Then i just adjusted the opacity til it looked somewhat believable.

Week 9: 88.3 Digital Version

Craft - I scanned in the hand drawing and tried to fuse it as best as possible with the radio which i drew using photoshop. The blending needs to be cleaned up and i need to finish the radio.
Concept - the concept is a hand breaking free from a boring looking radio. I tried to show the word escape by using handcuffs around the hand but that really didnt no have much significance to the meaning. So what you see is the current representation of Escape from Ordinary radio.
Composition - I simply kept it traditional. Everything centered and the colors just black and white. I wanted the emphasis to be on the concept more than the craft or composition.

Week 11: Teapots/Brushes

Layered Teapot
Craft was simply using different layers for each type of line. Each color and direction of line is on its own layer. Together all these layers complete the image and background.
Composition is simply just an accident. I began creating this piece not know what was to come of it. I had no plan for any compositional layouts to be done but this is how it turned out.
Concept- the concept for these pots was to let the lines create the image. Not to outline the pot and begin drawing the pot. By only creating the lines, this allowed the lines to create the image of the teapot.

Special Edition:Museum Most Inspiring Works

These are the three works i found most inspiring. All three of them caught my eye more than any other piece in the room. They all have some really cool color contrasts and some intense colors or shapes. I really enjoy looking at works and having to figure out what is going on.

Special Edition:Museum Modern Wing

Composition: This piece just really hit me because of the red circle. The way everything is laid out so suttle and warm is interrupted by the red sun. As if it is burnig through the trees.
Craft: This piece has a very nice craft quality to it. The statue seemed as if it were really a sandy bone in the desert. The shading is done to perfection and the color of the background really compliments the statue. In person, this piece really caught my eye.
Concept: Basically this piece is interesting because it takes away majority of an object but still leaves just enough for you to recognize it is a guitar. I like when artists try to take objects out of their normal form ad just make one part of it recognizable rather than just painting a guitar as a whole. This leaves much more room for interpretation.

Special Edition:Museum Classical Wing

Composition: The composition for this piece is very typical of the classical style of painting. It has a tight closed form and everything seems to be pretty symmetrical.
Craft: This piece had amazing detail. The brush strokes were perfect and every little detail of each piece was done neatly and precisely. Up close, the detail is amazing. Its hard to believe what some of these classical artists could accomplish with a brush.
Concept. I choose this piece because the concept is rather rare. Here you have a bum or beggar being shown in a piece of art. Usually the only ones that are being painted are people who could afford it or people of importance, so to see a beggar painted this large is quite unique, especially when the artist refers to him as a philosopher in the title.

Week 8: 88.3 Drawings

This is the drawing i am choosing to represent my idea. The concept is simply a hand breaking out of an ordinary radio. The escape from ordinary radio. The hand is reaching toward salvation which is the 88.3 frequency. The craft is done with pencil and i just decided to spend a little more time on this one than the others so i did some shading and darkening. The composition is of course not a square but as i re-create the digital version it will be transformed into a square.

Week 7: Escape From Ordinary Radio (thumbnails)

Most of my thumbnails are pretty self explanatory. The top left is emphasizing on the idea of escape. The subject is running out of a jail cell that contains "ordinary radio." The one next to it is a simliar scenario where a person is in a car running away form a radio on wheels. The middle left one is the idea that al radios are the same except for the middle radio which is the escape from ordinary. Then i arrived at my best idea which is the idea of handcuffs or a hand busting out of a radio. The notion that the person is literally trapped inside the radio and is breaking out. Those thumbnails will be seen in the next blog.

Week 6 : Hand Collages Final

All of my images seemed to have an overall well reception from the class. The only suggestions I got were to adjust some of the contrast and hue between the colored hands and the non-colored hands. So in Photoshop, I made my colored hands more saturated and adjusted to brightness of the natural colored hand. I left the background as is because it is all been flattened into one layer. So in order to create these finished versions, I made some minor adjustments to saturation and brightness to give me the contrast that I was looking for.

Week 5 : Hand Collages

Craft - The creation of this piece was simply using an eraser. I brought the vertical hand to the front. I adjusted the opacity so I could see the fingers of the purple hands. Then I used the eraser to erase where the fingers would be so that it looked that the purple hands were holding the vertical hand.

Composition - The reason I choose to arrange in this way is because I wanted to create something that looked realistic yet surreal. The image of two  purple hands holding another identical vertical twin of them is pretty intense. I wanted to make a bit confusion with all the finger and different colored fingers. At a first glance, the image is a bit confusing until your eyes get a chance to process what is happening. Then the reaction is how did he place the vertical hand inside the other two layers? That was the question I wanted to evoke in the viewer of this piece. Lastly, I placed the three main hands on a black and white background and made them a much larger scale. This again makes the viewer go straight to the larger, colored hands.

Concept - This is simply just trying to show a cool benefit of a simple tool in Photoshop. I wanted to show the power of just the eraser.

Week 4: Bread Collages (Craft)

Craft - I made this image by simply copying and pasting the image multiple times (Command C > Command V). Each time I did so, I would enlarge the image and send it to back (Layer > Arrange > Send to back). I continued until I had the entire page covered with the images each sitting inside one another. It took a little bit of playing with the sizes in order to get them to all fit inside the next.  Then on the smallest and closest forward layer I chose to manipulated the hue by adjusting the variance and saturation. I played with different levels of saturation and variance until I landed on an effect that added some distortion to the layer but did not distort the image too much where it was not recognizable. At the end of this Photoshop session, prior to saving of course, I would view the entire document on full screen to see how it hits on a large scale. I was happy with the image and saved it as a JPEG.

Composition - I arranged the piece in this way because i wanted to attract the viewers eye directly to the middle. I used a bulls eye type effect that draws you in one ring at a time until finally the viewer was focused on the middle piece. Also the distorted color of the inner image helps to draw one's attention to the middle.
Concept - I pretty much tried to draw the viewer the center image in two ways. In doing so, I wanted to see which method was more effective. Was the vibrant colored layer more attractive or was the bulls eye type layout more effective in drawing the viewer into the center.

Another attempt to draw the viewer to one specific image.

Week 3: Re-Shoot

In order to create this picture, I used "macro" mode on my camera to be sure I can get a close up, detailed image. I did not use any zoom and the picture was taken at night so the lighting is all artificial. My lighting was the light over my kitchen sink with the main light for the entire room switched on also.
The reason I chose this arrangement was simply because I was aiming for something very weird. I think hands look strange if they are posed in the right shape and to add that strange gesture coming through a piece of bread just really seemed to work. I shot several bread and hand shots and this was the one that stood out the most to me and to the other classmates. The eye immediately goes the fingers and then is directed to the tendens in the wrist. Although the bread is the most unconventional part, it seems as if the gesture of the hand captures your attention more.
The concept for this photo was really a combination of matter out of place and unconventional lighting. Not often do you see a slice of bread with a creepy hand coming through it. That alone made it weird but also the contrast of the lighting. The light was a al coming from directly above so there are some pretty harsh shadows ont he lower sides of the fingers. This contrast and shadow really is what makes this image as weird as it is.

Week 2: Photoshoot

I created this picture by using "macro" mode on my camera and getting as parallel as possible with the rope shreds. I used no zoom because it tended to blur my image. The lighting was about 4:00 so the sun was still out but not very luminate. I used open windows and all overhead lights from the room.

The reason i choose to shoot  this rope from an angle rather than from a top view is because i wanted to really emphasize on the tangled, chaotic aspect of the strands. From a top view you would nt be able to see the detailed strands as well as you can from this view.

As far as concept I was not really trying to say an ythign in particular. I just really liked this shot and I like how is shows something as simple as rope being so chaotic and intense from a closer view.

Week 1: Introduction

My name is Eric Perryman. I am a Senior at Saint Xavier Univeristy. I recently had switched my major from Secondary Art Education to Graphic Design just weeks prior to student teaching. I have come to realize I have a stronger interest in creating art than instructing it. I am involved in music, bands, and tattooing, all which can benefit well from a Graphic Design background. I hope to be working with musicians and/or producers to do advertising, marketing, or some sort of design. I hope this class will give me the fundamentals that I don't already know in creating digital art.
